Tech-Driven Personalisation Is Creating New Hospitality Jobs in South Africa

Technology is becoming central to how hotels, lodges and restaurants meet rising guest expectations. According to a recent survey of hospitality leaders, 77 % of operators are actively exploring new technologies to streamline operations and enhance guest experiences. At the same time, tourism and hospitality play a major role in the national economy. It was forecasted to support around 1.9 million jobs in South Africa in 2025 about 11.3 % of total employment.

Guests now expect seamless mobile check-ins, personalised recommendations and digitally supported service, all delivered with the warmth and human touch that makes hospitality special. Technology such as property management systems, CRM platforms, mobile check-ins and AI-driven communication tools are increasingly part of daily operations, but these tools are there to support people, not replace them. It’s hospitality professionals who interpret data, manage digital tools and deliver the personalised experiences guests value most.

That means traditional roles are evolving. Front desk agents now manage both face-to-face service and digital platforms; guest services teams use data insights to anticipate needs; food and beverage teams rely on digital ordering and point-of-sale systems; and supervisors and managers analyse operational data for smarter decision-making. This shift is reshaping job descriptions and broadening skills requirements.

The industry is also creating entirely new career paths, from digital concierges and guest experience coordinators to hospitality IT support roles, digital marketing specialists and compliance administrators. With South Africa facing persistently high unemployment, including elevated youth unemployment rates, these digitally enhanced roles offer meaningful opportunities for growth, career development and economic participation.

These trends come at a time when the broader labour market remains challenging: South Africa’s overall unemployment rate was reported at 32.9 % in early 2025, emphasizing the importance of sectors like hospitality in supporting employment. Especially during peak consumer spending periods such as school holidays and the festive season.

To thrive in this environment, hospitality professionals need ongoing upskilling. Capabilities such as digital literacy, data awareness, communication across digital channels, adaptability and leadership in tech-enabled environments are increasingly essential. Businesses also need to invest in strong compliance practices across labour standards, health and safety, data protection and skills development to ensure sustainable growth and resilience.

This is where Zest Hospitality plays a vital role.
